Baseball Game Preview: La Canada Spartans vs. Monrovia Wildcats

The La Canada Spartans are taking a road trip to challenge the Monrovia Wildcats at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a four-game winning streak alive.

On Tuesday, it was close, but La Canada sidestepped Oak Park for a 5-3 victory.

Ross Piken tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only one hit over five innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four).

On the hitting side, Austin Loughrin was excellent, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Will Park, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one triple and one run.

Meanwhile, Monrovia was able to grind out a solid win over West Covina on Monday, taking the game 10-6.

Monrovia also got a great performance from Alex Myers as he tossed 5.1 innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. Those hits were Myers' first of the season.

At the plate, Troy Grise was a standout: he went 2-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Kaleb Ellison was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one home run and two runs.

Monrovia kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 12 hits in three consecutive matchups.

The victory got La Canada back to even at 7-7. As for Monrovia, their record now sits at 11-3.
