Churchill County (Fallon, Nev.) saw its 14-point lead dwindle to 10, but still managed to hang on and upset
Moapa Valley (Overton, Nev.) 34-24 on Saturday.
After taking the lead on a kick return touchdown by
Trent Tarner in the first quarter, the Greenwave were up 14-12 at the half.
Churchill County grew its lead to nine points entering the fourth quarter. CC scored two times in the third, including once on a touchdown pass by
Morgan Dirickson to
Tyler Bagby.
The loss came as a surprise for the Pirates, who entered the game ranked No. 6 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for Nevada, while the Fallon school was ranked No. 12.
Moapa Valley came in giving up 9.8 points per game this season. MV had a hard time against Churchill County's offense, who entered the game scoring 46.2 points per game.
The defeat comes as a step back for Moapa Valley, which notched a 20-13 victory over Virgin Valley in its previous outing.
The Pirates (11-1) will play a playoff game against Faith Lutheran next week. The Crusaders enter the tilt sporting a 10-2 record for the season.
