Baseball Recap: Aurora Comes Up Short

Aurora had lost five straight at home, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 6-14 to make it six. They came up short against the St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish, falling 12-1. The Greenmen were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Fighting Irish apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Aurora saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ben Lukasik, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base and one run. Lukasik is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played.

As for St. Vincent-St. Mary, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-7 record this season. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matchups by seven runs or more this season.

On St. Vincent-St. Mary's side, Matthew Large spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on four hits and racked up nine Ks.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Zack Kurkey, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, three doubles, and two RBI. Those three doubles gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Matthew Engelhart, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Aurora will venture away from home to face off against Barberton at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for St. Vincent-St. Mary, they will square off against Chagrin Falls at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The last three games the Tigers have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
