The Weedsport Wolverines will venture away from home to face off against the Port Byron Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Weedsport is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
On Wednesday, Weedsport sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 win over Jordan-Elbridge. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Wolverines have posted against the Eagles since April 1, 2019.

Nico Giacolone made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Weedsport is undefeated when Giacolone posts two or more runs, but 3-4 otherwise.
Giacolone wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Patrick Whitman, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, Monday just wasn't the day for Port Byron's offense. They fell just short of Central by a score of 2-0 on Monday. The shutout was out of character for the Panthers seeing as the last time the team failed to score was back in March.
Weedsport has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Port Byron, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Weedsport has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Port Byron struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Weedsport was able to grind out a solid victory over Port Byron when the teams last played two weeks ago, winning 7-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wolverines since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
