The Port of Los Angeles Polar Bears will face off against the Harbor Teacher Monarchs at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. Port of Los Angeles is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
On Monday, Port of Los Angeles earned a 5-1 victory over King/Drew. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Polar Bears.
Jimena Vargas spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Rochelle Watkins, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Harbor Teacher waltzed into their game on Monday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They put the hurt on the Pathfinders with a sharp 15-4 win. Considering the Monarchs have won six matches by more than nine runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Candice Gutierrez was incredible, firing off two home runs, six RBI, and three runs while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Samantha Galima, who scored three runs while going 2-for-4.
Harbor Teacher hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least three batters in three consecutive contests.
Harbor Teacher pushed their record up to 6-2 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.7 runs over those games. As for Port of Los Angeles, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Thursday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Port of Los Angeles has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .482. However, it's not like Harbor Teacher struggles in that department as they've averaged .507. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Port of Los Angeles' way against Harbor Teacher when the teams last played back in May of 2024, as Port of Los Angeles made off with a 15-0 victory. Will the Polar Bears repeat their success, or do the Monarchs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
