Baseball Game Preview: Eunice Cardinals vs. Loving Falcons

The Eunice Cardinals will head out on the road to face off against the Loving Falcons at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.

Eunice barely beat Texico the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Cardinals blew past the Wolverines 24-5 on Saturday. That looming 24-5 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Cardinals yet this season.

Jose Calvillo was a standout: he scored three runs while going 4-for-6. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Fernando Serna, who scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of his six plate appearances.

Eunice always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .612. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Loving had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.7 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Saturday. They put the hurt on the Panthers with a sharp 13-3 victory. The Falcons might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three matches by nine runs or more this season.

The team relied heavily on Trey Tarvin, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-5. He is becoming a predictor of Loving's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 0-3 when he doesn't). Diego Leija was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-4.

Eunice has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-3 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.9 runs over those games. As for Loving, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-3.

Eunice couldn't quite get it done against Loving in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 as they fell 7-2. Can the Cardinals avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
