Softball Recap: Grand County Picks Up Sixth Consecutive Victory

Grand County came tearing into Friday's contest with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 16.4 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They were the clear victors by a 12-5 margin over the Gunnison Valley Bulldogs. The Red Devils have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Bulldogs, too.

CHLOE Byrd made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.

In other batting news, Danica Hirschfeld was excellent, going 2-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Kemree Wells was another key player, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Grand County pushed their record up to 16-7 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Gunnison Valley, their loss was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 18-6.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: the Bulldogs beat Grand County by a score of 10-3 later that day.
