Basketball Recap: Hastings Takes a Loss

Hastings was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their ninth straight loss. They were beaten by the York Dukes 56-22. While losing is never fun, the Tigers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 173rd in Nebraska, while the Dukes are ranked 23rd in Nebraska).

Despite the defeat, Hastings saw an underclassman step up: freshman Ella Timsman posted ten points and seven boards. Another player making a difference was Breianna Campbell, who earned no points along with six rebounds and three steals.

York had a senior duo take command as Chloe Koch had 12 points and four steals and Lainey Portwine put up 12 points in addition to seven steals and five boards. Portwine has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 17 times she's played. Kaylie Hammer also deserves some recognition as she posted her first assist of the season.

Hastings' loss dropped their record down to 4-17. As for York, their victory was their ninth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 21-2.

Hastings has already played their next game, a 56-48 defeat against McCook on the 24th. As for York, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 59-44 win against Aurora on the 24th.
