What do 13 of 24 UIL soccer state tourney qualifiers have in common?

The trend in this year's UIL soccer state tournament is on final four newcomers. From the 24 girls and boys teams that have advanced, 13 are first-timers.

The state tournament is scheduled for Wednesday though Saturday at Georgetown's Birkelbach Field. Girls and boys champions will be crowned in three classifications.

Here is a look at the state semifinal match-ups:

GIRLS
Class 4A
Stephenville 23-4 vs. Athens 15-10-1, 11 a.m. Wednesday
Both teams are in the state final four for the first time. Stephenville (Coach Casey Weil) defeated defending state champion Kennedale 1-0 (3-1 in overtime shootout) in the Region I title game. Honeybees keeper Madison Wyly had a pair of saves in the shootout.
Athens (Coach Mark Hall) has only four seniors on its 20-player roster but one, Makayle Traxson, scored three goals in the Region II title game.



Jasper 26-1 vs. Boerne 20-4-1, 1:30 p.m. Wednesday
Jasper (Coach Gabriela Carter), a state finalist last year, is in the final four for third consecutive season and returns all-tourney selections Julie Carter and Kaitlin Campos.
Boerne (Coach Humberto Atilano), making its second trip to state, has outscored four playoff opponents 16-2 including a 3-2 win over Wimberley in the Region IV title game on goals by Paige Marcell, Presley Klar and Brianna Barrera.

Winners advance to championship 2:30 p.m. Thursday
Class 5A
Highland Park (Dallas) 25-0-0 vs. Boerne-Champion (Boerne) 16-8-2, 9:30 a.m. Thursday
Highland Park (Coach Stewart Brown) leads the unbeaten Lady Scots to their 12th state tourney appearance and fifth in the last six seasons. Highland Park looks to avenge a loss in the Class 6A state final last year to Flower Mound. Both goals in a 2-1 Region II final win over Prosper were scored by freshman Presley Echols.
Champion, making its third state appearance, started the season 1-6 and was outscored 19-2 in those losses before righting the ship. In a 1-0 Region IV title win over Alamo Heights (San Antonio), Sydney von Rosenberg had the only goal.

Rouse (Leander) 20-1-4 vs. Aledo 21-3-3, noon Thursday
Both teams are making state tourney debuts. Only six Rouse (Coach Katie Kistner) opponents have managed to avoid a shutout. Haley Hoppe had a pair of header goals, including one in overtime, to fuel a 3-2 win over College Station in a regional final.
Aledo (Coach Bryan Johnson) has allowed only three goals in its last 13 matches. Keeper Mackenzie Covington recorded her fourth playoff clean sheet and Brooke Jones had a pair of goals in a 3-0 Region I title game victory over Monterey (Lubbock).

Winners advance to championship 11 a.m. Saturday.

Class 6A
Keller 21-2-2 vs. Hendrickson (Pflugerville) 17-4-4, 9:30 a.m. Friday
Both teams are making their final four debut. Keller (Coach Billy Griffiths), a 3-1 loser to Southlake Carroll in the regular season, defeated the Lady Dragons 2-0 in the Region I final on goals by Cami Floth and Makenna Pate.
Hendrickson (Coach Rennie Rebe) has won its last four playoff games by a single goal including a 3-2 overtime triumph over The Woodlands in the Region II title game. Senior midfielder Christina Arteaga scored the decisive goal.

Tompkins (Katy) 18-4-3 vs. Vandegrift (Austin) 19-1-4, noon Friday
Tompkins (Coach Jarrett Shipman) makes its state tourney debut. An injury to a starter opened a spot for freshman Valeria Gomez and she scored both goals in a 2-0 Region III title-game win over previously undefeated three-time Region III champion Cinco Ranch (Katy).
Vandegrift (Coach Jennifer Hardy) makes its third state tourney appearance, all coming in the last four seasons. Holly Streber and Afrah Khan had goals in a 2-0 Region IV final victory over Steele (Cibolo).



Winners advance to championship 4 p.m. Saturday.

BOYS
Class 4A
Wheatley (Houston) 13-1 vs. Kilgore 19-5-2, 4 p.m. Wednesday
First-time state semifinalist Wheatley (Coach Nwabuese Obi) defeated Washington (Houston) in the Region III final 6-2. Keni Medina scored three goals and Jesus Cortina had two.
Kilgore (Coach Austin Walter) is making its fourth state tourney appearance and its third in succession. The Bulldogs have scored 24 playoff goals including two by Elian Torres in the Region II title game victory.

Progreso 24-5-2 vs. Bridgeport 18-3-5, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday
Progreso (Coach Margarito Jimenez) makes its second consecutive state tourney appearance after losing in a shootout to Palestine in last year's final. Hugo Guajardo and Jordi Gaytan each scored twice in a 5-0 Region IV title game.
Bridgeport (Coach Ben Parks) earned its first state final four berth with a 2-1 Region I victory over San Elizario. Eric Aguilar and Jesus Aguilar scored goals for Bridgeport.

Winners advance to championship 2:30 p.m. Friday

Class 5A
Wakeland (Frisco) 20-4-1 vs. Wichita Falls 16-2-6, 5 p.m. Thursday
Wakeland (Coach Andy Holt) makes its fourth state tourney trip and its third in four years after losing in a shootout in last year's title game. The Wolverines returned only two starters in Holt's first season at the helm. The only goal in Wakeland's 1-0 Region II final victory over Midlothian was supplied by Matt Ribble.
To make the school's first state final four, Wichita Falls (Coach Patrick McCauley) had wins over El Paso schools Bel Air and Del Valle at the Region I tourney. All five of the Coyotes' playoff victories have been by one goal.

Lopez (Brownsville) 16-3-1 vs. Waller 21-5-3, 7:30 p.m. Thursday
Lopez (Coach Amadeo Escandon) makes its fifth state tourney trip and its third in the last four years thanks to a 1-0 victory over Veterans Memorial (Brownsville) in the Region IV title game with the goal coming from junior Jose Echavarria.
Waller (Coach Juan Saldena) makes its first final four appearance after its fifth consecutive one-goal playoff victory over Waco in the Region III final. Ricardo Castillo and Luis Garcia accounted for the Waller goals.



Winners advance to championship 1:30 p.m. Saturday

Class 6A
Sam Houston (Arlington) 21-2-2 vs. Dobie (Houston) 20-2-4, 5 p.m. Friday
Sam Houston (Coach Joey Rodriguez) is in the final four for the second time and has scored three goals in each of the final four playoff wins including a 3-2 overtime triumph over Hebron in the Region I title game with the winning goal coming from Sergio Martinez.
Dobie (Coach Justo Manrique) is a first-time state semifinalist, earning that distinction with a 3-2 overtime shootout win over Channelview in the Region III final. Bryan Nava and Isreal Perez had goals in regulation. A shootout save by keeper Ramon Cahue clinched victory.

Juarez-Lincoln (La Joya) 30-3-1 vs. Dallas Jesuit 20-3-1, 7:30 p.m. Friday
Juarez-Lincoln (Coach Victor Ramos) earned its first trip to state by mowing through Region IV, outscoring five playoff opponents 14-2 with four shutouts including a 1-0 win over Edinburg North (Edinburg) in the regional final.
Jesuit (Coach Charles DeLong) has won four of its five playoff matches by a 2-0 score, including the victory over Sachse in the Region II title game with goals supplied by Tommy Flaim on a penalty kick and Andrew Gilchrist.

Winners advance to championship 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
