Baseball Recap: Watauga Triumphs

Watauga owes their pitching crew a big pat on the back after their performance on Tuesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Ashe County Huskies, sneaking past 2-0. The Pioneers haven't had any issues with the Huskies recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.

Evan Burroughs made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has become a key player for Watauga: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most two hits, but 5-6 otherwise. Burroughs was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing two bases. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last five games he's played.

In other pitching news, Watauga got a great performance from Everett Gryder as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over five innings pitched. Gryder also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because the Pioneers are 3-1 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 4-6 otherwise.

Burroughs wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Jake Blanton, who went 1-for-2 with one triple and one RBI. That triple marked the first that Blanton hit this season.

The win got Watauga back to even at 7-7. As for Ashe County, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 8-7.

Watauga has already played their next matchup, a 7-6 defeat against South Caldwell on the 4th. As for Ashe County, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 10-0 victory against West Wilkes on the 3rd.
