Basketball Recap: Varela Gets the Win

Varela hadn't done well against Sunset recently (they were 0-4 in their previous four matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Varela Vipers had just enough and edged the Sunset Knights out 53-51. This was payback for the Vipers, who suffered an 82-72 loss the last time these two teams met.

When it comes to explaining why Sunset lost, don't look at Brandon Luis. Despite the final result, he went 8 for 17 on his way to 25 points. Luis' evening made it seven games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Ethan Rojas was another key player, putting up nine points and five boards.

Varela now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Sunset, they moved to 5-4 with that defeat, which also ended their four-game winning streak.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Varela will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Hialeah-Miami Lakes at 7:30 p.m. on January 7, 2025. Varela has insisted on making their lastthree contests complete nail-biters, turning in a record of 1-2 during that stretch of close contests. Sunset also won't see the court for a while: their next match is against Mater Bay Academy at 7:30 p.m. on January 7, 2025. Mater Bay Academy will roll in looking for their ninth straight win, something Sunset surely won't give up without a fight.
