Football Recap: Central Catholic Skates Past Savio with Ease

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Central Catholic). They blew past the Savio Eagles, posting a 53-21 win. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Buttons also won the last time the pair played back in September of 2024.

Central Catholic's win on Friday was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Joseph Carreon, who rushed for 74 yards and one score. Antonio Guevarra was another key pass catcher, picking up 92 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Central Catholic didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. Avin Houston picked up that interception and then proceeded to rub salt in the wound by taking it back the other way for a touchdown. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 1.5 defended passes per game. He got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Special teams played a big role in the game for Central Catholic, adding 17 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Michael Munoz, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.

The victory got Central Catholic back to even at 2-2. As for Savio, they are on a 14-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-5.

Looking ahead, Central Catholic will host St. Thomas Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Eagles' defense has only allowed 13.8 points per game this season, so the Buttons' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Savio, they will challenge Antonian Prep at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Eagles will be up against the Apaches' rather soft defense (which has allowed 43.25 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
