Basketball Recap: Browne Takes a Loss

Browne was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They had to suffer through an 84-54 loss at the hands of the Cesar Chavez Champions. While losing is never fun, the Bruins can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 223rd, while the Champions are ranked 63rd).

Browne's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Desmynn Beavers-Smith, who went 6-for-14 to rack up 14 points and six boards, and Tony Bayigamba, who went 5-for-9 on his way to 13 points and six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Karmello Walker, who posted seven points and six boards.

Even though they lost, Browne smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive board total in three consecutive matches.

Cesar Chavez's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Lex Clontz led the charge by going 12-for-19 en route to 32 points and seven rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Clontz has scored at least a third of Cesar Chavez's points. Drayce Crenshaw was another key player, dropping a double-double with 12 points and ten boards.

Browne's defeat dropped their record down to 9-15. As for Cesar Chavez, they pushed their record up to 12-10 with the victory, which was their third straight at home.

Browne didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 67-62 win against South Mountain on the 7th. As for Cesar Chavez, they have also already played their next contest, a 72-46 victory against Shadow Ridge on the 7th.
