The Filer Wildcats will face off against the Sugar-Salem Diggers at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Filer is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.9 runs per game this season.
Having struggled with four losses in a row, Filer turned things around against Mountain Home on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 19-9 margin over the Tigers. The high-scoring effort was just what the Wildcats needed considering they were shut out in their previous match.
Ava Smith made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances. Those stolen bases marked the first that she snagged this season.
In other batting news, Filer got a massive performance out of Heidi Winegar, who went 2-for-5 with two triples, three runs, and four RBI. Another player making a difference was Madilyne Dyer, who scored two runs and stole four bases while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Filer always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .553. They are 3-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, Sugar-Salem waltzed into their game on Thursday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They walked away with a 7-4 victory over the Eagles.
Kambry Bartholick was excellent, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Seneca Bitter, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Sugar-Salem's win bumped their record up to 6-2. As for Filer, their victory bumped their record up to 3-5.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Filer hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.8 home runs per game. However, it's not like Sugar-Salem struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.8 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Filer skirted past Sugar-Salem 5-4 in their previous matchup back in April of 2023. Will the Wildcats repeat their success, or do the Diggers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
