Softball Recap: Villa Park Takes a Loss

Villa Park dropped their record down to 12-12 on Tuesday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the La Habra Highlanders by a score of 5-4. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Highlanders this season, with their most recent loss being a 15-0 defeat on April 3rd.

As for La Habra, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.1 runs on average over those games.

For La Habra's part, Madison Payne spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on 12 hits. Payne has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up a single walk in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Eliana Corona was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Angelina Renteria, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

Looking ahead, Villa Park is taking a road trip to face off against Cypress at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday. The Centurions' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Spartans' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for La Habra, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Sonora at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Highlanders 2.8, the Raiders 3.7) so any runs scored will be well earned.
