McDonald County took a six-run defeat the last time they faced off against Mt. Vernon, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Mustangs won by a run and slipped past the Mountaineers 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mustangs have posted against the Mountaineers since April 27, 2017.

McDonald County let Brodie Roessler and Jake O'Brien run wild. Roessler went 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI, while O'Brien went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base and two RBI. That's the most RBI O'Brien has posted since back in March. Axeton Bateman also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen bases of the season.

McDonald County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .409. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

McDonald County's win bumped their record up to 5-12. As for Mt. Vernon, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 7-9.

Vernon, they will square off against Ash Grove at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Pirates' pitching crew has only allowed 3.5 runs per game this season, so the Mountaineers' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
