Baseball Game Preview: Pyramid Lake Lakers vs. Virginia City Muckers

Pyramid Lake and Virginia City are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2022, but likely not for long. The Lakers will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against the Muckers at 3:00 p.m. Pyramid Lake is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Pyramid Lake and Virginia City meet (four straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Tuesday. The Lakers blew past the Muckers 13-1.

John Kelly was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out 17 over seven innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Pyramid Lake is 4-2 when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-5 otherwise. Kelly was also solid in the batter's box, earning one run and three stolen bases. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played.

In other batting news, Albert Phoenix and Joshua Shaw did most of the damage at the plate: Phoenix went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI, while Shaw got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. That's the most hits Phoenix has posted since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Noah Sarabia, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Pyramid Lake has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for Virginia City, they are on a ten-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-16.

Virginia City's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Pyramid Lake has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .447.
