Basketball Recap: Lake Norman Charter Falls Despite Big Games from Caroline Mercuri and Reece Long

If Lake Norman Charter was riding high fresh off their 67-32 takedown of Carson last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Lake Norman Charter Knights received a blow on Friday as they fell 75-60 to the Robinson Bulldogs. While losing is never fun, the Knights can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 230th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 111th).

Lake Norman Charter's loss came despite strong showings from Reece Long and Caroline Mercuri. Long almost dropped a double-double on 23 points and nine boards, while Mercuri went 8 of 16 on her way to 20 points and eight rebounds. Long is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last five games she's played. Another player making a difference was Abby Courtney, who posted three points and six assists.

Even though they lost, Lake Norman Charter smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in 14 consecutive matches.

It was another big night for Camri Hobbs, who went 16 for 19 en route to 40 points in addition to eight rebounds and four steals for Robinson. Those 40 points gave Hobbs a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Destiny Chambers, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten boards.

Lake Norman Charter's defeat dropped their record down to 10-6. As for Robinson, the victory (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 14-4.

Lake Norman Charter will take on Concord at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Robinson, they will be playing in front of their home fans against West Rowan at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The timing is sure in Robinson's favor as the team sits on 11 straight wins at home (dating back to last season) while West Rowan has been banged up by eight consecutive losses on the road.
