Basketball Game Preview: Springport Spartans vs. Maple Valley Lions

The Springport Spartans and the Maple Valley Lions will compete for holiday cheer at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Springport is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.

Springport is headed into the contest having just posted their closest win since December 8, 2023 on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Stockbridge 49-47. The 49-point effort marked the Spartans' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Springport's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tucker Wiginton led the charge by going 5 of 11 en route to 13 points and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Jake Kregel, who posted ten points and six assists.

Springport smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in five consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Maple Valley). They walked away with a 68-56 win over Calhoun Christian on Tuesday. The victory was some much needed relief for the Lions as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Springport pushed their record up to 5-0 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.3 points per game. As for Maple Valley, their victory bumped their record up to 2-4.

Springport strolled past Maple Valley in their previous meeting back in February by a score of 62-47. Does Springport have another victory up their sleeve, or will Maple Valley turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
