Baseball Recap: Silver Valley Comes Up Short

Silver Valley had lost three straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped down to 6-11-1 to make it four. They lost 13-3 to Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Trojans have suffered since March 24th.

Silver Valley saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Shane Groubert, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base.

As for Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-13-1 record this season. The result was nothing new for Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy, who have now won seven contests by seven runs or more so far this season.

On Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy's side, Ryelon Brandt made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. That's the most strikeouts Brandt has posted since back in May of 2025. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 6-2-1 (and 2-11 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Andrew Honnold and Jared Moreno did most of the damage at the plate: Honnold went 2-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and one double, while Moreno went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. Moreno has become a key player for Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 5-13-1 otherwise. Robert Espinoza was another key player, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with three runs.

Coming up, Silver Valley will challenge Academy for Academic Excellence at 3:15 p.m. on Monday. As for Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy, they will take on Academy of Careers & Exploration at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Eagle have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.37 runs per game on average), something Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy will no doubt try to take advantage of.
