Basketball Game Preview: Calhoun County Saints vs. Williston-Elko Blue Devils

The Calhoun County Saints will challenge the Williston-Elko Blue Devils at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Calhoun County is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak.

On Tuesday, Calhoun County ended up a good deal behind Wagener-Salley and lost 45-27.

The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Jamaryria McMichael, who dropped a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards. She has been hot recently, having also posted five or more blocks the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Angel Dove, who posted six points and ten steals.

Meanwhile, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Williston-Elko beat Blackville-Hilda 43-38 on Tuesday. The Blue Devils haven't had any issues with the Fighting Hawks recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.

Calhoun County better focus on containing Shanya Mays and Alyah Holmes as the pair were huge in Williston-Elko's win. Mays had ten points along with six rebounds and four steals, while Holmes shot 83% from the field to rack up 11 points and four blocks. With that strong performance, Mays is now averaging an impressive 2.1 steals per game.

Calhoun County's loss dropped their record down to 2-9. As for Williston-Elko, their win bumped their record up to 7-4.

Friday's contest is shaping up to be a scrappy game: Calhoun County has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 31 boards per game. It's a different story for Williston-Elko, though, as they've been averaging only 14.4 rebounds. Given Calhoun County's sizable advantage in that area, the Blue Devils will need to find a way to close that gap.

Calhoun County came up short against Williston-Elko in their previous matchup back in February of 2025, falling 45-41. Can the Saints avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
