Soccer Game Preview: Nansemond River vs. Maury

The Nansemond River Warriors will head out to take on the Maury Commodores at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Nansemond River had to skate by with only a one-goal margin when they last took the pitch, which might have inspired the eight-goal drubbing they dealt Lakeland on Thursday. The Warriors never let the Cavaliers get on the board and left with an 8-0 victory. The final result isn't all the surprising considering Nansemond River's considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia soccer rankings (they are ranked 33rd, while Lakeland are ranked 258th).

Meanwhile, Maury entered their tilt with Churchland on Wednesday with three consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with four. They blew past the Truckers 5-0. Give Maury's defense some credit: that's the team's third straight shutout.

They hit Churchland with a three-pronged attack, as the team got scores from Sol McGhee (2), Ella White (2), and Zoe Redel.

Maury pushed their record up to 11-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only given up zero goals over those four matches. As for Nansemond River, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 10-2.

Nansemond River was able to grind out a solid victory over Maury in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, winning 2-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Warriors since the team won't have the home-pitch advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
