6A Region 1 recap October 1, 2013
Tupelo extended the longest winning streak in 6A Region 1 this week by beating Hernando, 41-7. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
Grenada was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after topping DeSoto Central. The Chargers came in at 15 in the state poll after placing at number 27 last week.
Ross Trail threw for 194 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Trail put up the best numbers in passing as Olive Branch topped Southaven. Trail's favorite target this week was Dontavis Bruce, who caught 7 passes for 117 yards.
The Conquistadors' Trail and Bruce led the league in both passing and receiving yards. Trail has thrown for 1,010 yards this season, while Bruce, a 5-foot-10 receiver, has 29 catches for 411 yards. Darrell Henderson from South Panola leads the league in rushing with 739 yards.
The most important game in the league this week will be the match up between Tupelo and Grenada. Trent Hammond's team comes into the matchup ranked 12th in the state, while Ashley Kuhn's team ranks 15th.
Fans will be treated to a premier battle in the secondary when Olive Branch's Bruce goes up against the Tigers' Ephraim Kitchens.
Next week's game between Scott Samsel's team and South Panola will feature a good passing match up as Trail will test his arm against Kitchens' defensive ability.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Golden Wave take on the Chargers. Tupelo has allowed 41 points this season, while Grenada has given up 53. The Golden Wave allowed 7 points last week as they bested the Tigers.
The Chargers fell to the Conquistadors 49-12 last week, the largest margin of any game.
