Preview: Chapman Panthers vs. Broome Centurions
Chapman is on a six-game streak of home wins, while Broome is on a six-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Chapman Panthers will take on the Broome Centurions at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Friday, Chapman really took it to Blue Ridge for the full four quarters, racking up a 50-21 victory on the road. The match was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 47-7.
Chapman got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Coleman Gray out in front who threw for 128 yards and two touchdowns while completing 100% of his passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Shawn Cunningham was another key contributor, picking up 89 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Broome took their game at home on Friday with ease, bagging a 55-6 victory over Carolina Academy. Given Broome's advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 47th, while Carolina Academy is ranked 214th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jaylen Mcgill was his usual excellent self, rushing for 228 yards and four touchdowns on only 12 carries. Mcgill hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for four straight games. Another player making a difference was Kamajay Brackett-Brannon, who rushed for 75 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries.
Another reason for the win was Broome's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for five sacks. Leading the way was Dt Thompson and his two sacks.
Their wins lifted both teams to an identical 8-1.
Everything went Chapman's way against Broome in their previous meeting back in October of 2022 as Chapman made off with a 32-6 win. Will Chapman repeat their success, or does Broome have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
