Basketball Recap: Friday's Win Is Utopia's Tenth in Last 11 Outings

Utopia hadn't done well against Rocksprings recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Utopia Buffaloes put the hurt on the Rocksprings Angoras with a sharp 79-59 victory. The Buffaloes have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 15 games by 20 points or more this season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Utopia to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jett Smothers, who posted 21 points in addition to eight assists and three steals. The dominant performance gave Smothers a new career-high in assists. Another player making a difference was Taylor Wiekamp, who scored 14 points along with seven rebounds and four steals.

Smothers wasn't the only one working in the assist department: Utopia was working as a unit and finished the game with 27 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Several Angoras players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Hunter Taylor, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 13 boards. Taylor's evening made it seven games in a row in which he has scored at least 17 points. Roy Estrada was another key player, going 8 for 12 on his way to 20 points.

Utopia is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 26-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.0 points over those games. As for Rocksprings, their loss dropped their record down to 10-13.

Looking ahead, Utopia is taking a road trip to challenge Leakey at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Leakey has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the contest with 22 straight defeats, while Utopia will come in with seven straight wins. As for Rocksprings, they will be playing at home against Comstock at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Rocksprings' favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last six games.
