Baseball Recap: Seventy-First Puts Losing Streak Behind Them

Seventy-First came into Thursday's contest having lost nine straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They put the hurt on the Douglas Byrd Eagles with a sharp 17-2 victory on Thursday. The Falcons not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since February 27th (when they won 17-1).

Chris Melendez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. He has become a key player for Seventy-First: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most one hit, but 2-15 otherwise. Melendez was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cory Bush, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with six stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Seventy-First's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 0-15 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Charles Gunnings, who went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.

Seventy-First always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .613. They are 4-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Seventy-First's win bumped their record up to 4-16. As for Douglas Byrd, they are on a 37-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-14.

As of now, neither Seventy-First nor the Eagles have any future games scheduled.
