Basketball Recap: Yuma Catholic's Loss Ends Eight-Game Winning Streak on the Road

Yuma Catholic and Valley Christian squared off in some playoff action on Saturday, but Yuma Catholic had to settle for second. They took an 81-76 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Valley Christian Trojans. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Friday (75), the Shamrocks still had to take the loss.

Yuma Catholic's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Fernando Vazquez Lima, who almost dropped a double-double with 21 points and nine assists. The contest was Vazquez Lima's third in a row with at least 17 points. Another player making a difference was Lucky Patane, who went 8-for-13 to rack up 19 points.

Valley Christian got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Colby Jessup out in front who shot 57% from the field en route to 36 points. Jessup is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 17 or more in each of the last 23 games he's played. Carson Grier was another key player, almost dropping a double-double with 16 points and nine assists.

Yuma Catholic's loss ended an eight-game streak of away wins and brought them to 24-3. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 79.4 points over those games. As for Valley Christian, the victory was the 17th in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 25-3.

Yuma Catholic does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Valley Christian, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 70-49 win against Gilbert Christian on the 1st.
