Baseball Recap: Basalt Comes Up Short

Basalt extended their losing streak to three on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 9-10 in the process. They took a 12-9 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Glenwood Springs Demons. The Longhorns were not able to make up for their loss to the Demons from their previous meeting back in March of 2024.

Elias Schendler and Kody Barton did some serious damage despite the final result: Schendler went 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Barton went 3-for-5 with one home run and three RBI. Basalt is 3-1 when Barton posts three or more RBI, but 6-9 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Hagan Hamlet, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.

As for Glenwood Springs, the victory was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 15-5. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.1 runs over those games.

On Glenwood Springs' side, Jackson Irving made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Irving was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Evan Neuman, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. He has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last five times he's played. Josh Doll was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs.

Coming up, Basalt will venture away from home to square off against Resurrection Christian at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Glenwood Springs, they will welcome Eagle Valley at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. The timing is sure in the Demons' favor as the team sits on five straight wins at home while the Devils have been banged up by eight consecutive losses on the road.
