Baseball Recap: St. Johns Comes Up Short

St. Johns was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 10-9 heartbreaker at the hands of the Lakewood Vikings. That's two games in a row now that the Redwings have lost by just one run.

Nicholas Schafer was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He is becoming a predictor of St. Johns' success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 4-2 (and 3-9 when he doesn't). Schafer was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run.

In other batting news, Austin Beals was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with two runs. Collin Buzinski was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

St. Johns' defeat dropped their record down to 7-11. As for Lakewood, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 7-2.

Coming up, St. Johns will be playing in front of their home fans against Williamston at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hornets' pitching crew has only allowed 3.1 runs per game this season, so the Redwings' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Lakewood, they wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 4-2 loss against Lansing Catholic on the 2nd.
