Softball Recap: Handley Comes Up Short

Handley had lost 14 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 0-6 to make it 15. They came up short against the Rock Ridge Phoenix, falling 14-1. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Phoenix this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 23-3 back in March.

As for Rock Ridge, their victory ended a four-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 5-7. The result was nothing new for the Phoenix, who have now won five matches by 11 runs or more so far this season.

For Rock Ridge's part, Sahasra Abbineni made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave Abbineni a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kyra Young, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. Grayson Andrews was another key player, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Handley will face off against Liberty at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Rock Ridge, they will challenge Dominion at 6:30 p.m. on May 1.
