Baseball Game Preview: Marshall Eagles vs. Salesian Mustangs

The Marshall Eagles will take on the Salesian Mustangs at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Marshall's pitching crew has only allowed 3.3 runs per game this season, so Salesian's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Salesian will be up against a hot Marshall team: the squad just extended their winning streak to three. Marshall came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 3-2 W against Western Christian.

Michael Gerst looked comfortable as he pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. What's more, he posted five strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2024.

At the plate, Adan Castro was excellent, scoring a run while going 1-for-2. Another player making a difference was Ben Muro, who went 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Salesian got the win against Legacy on Monday by a conclusive 8-2. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Mustangs.

The team relied heavily on Nate Zesati, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Sebastian Castellanos was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Marshall's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-1-1. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Salesian, they now have a winning record of 4-3.

Marshall was able to grind out a solid victory over Salesian in their previous matchup back in March of 2023, winning 7-4. Does Marshall have another victory up their sleeve, or will Salesian turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
