Football Game Preview: Newport Harbor Sailors vs. Warren Bears

The Newport Harbor Sailors will square off against the Warren Bears at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Newport Harbor has three straight victories, Warren has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Newport Harbor's defense heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They strolled past Classical Academy with points to spare, taking the game 19-0.

Scarlett Guyser and Sylie Cid were among the main playmakers for Newport Harbor as the former rushed for 87 yards on only seven carries and the latter rushed for 20 yards and one TD. An impressive showing, but Cid really ramped things up playing D: she picked up a sack and made three total tackles in addition to snagging an interception which she returned one-yard for a touchdown.

On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Newport Harbor's defense and their seven sacks. Ava Mortensen was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up six herself. Mortensen is crushing it when it comes to sacks: she's posted at least one every time she's taken the field this season. Cid got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Meanwhile, Warren came up short against JSerra Catholic on Friday and fell 25-12. While losing is never fun, the Bears can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 103rd, while the Lions are ranked 13th).

Warren's defeat dropped their record down to 3-7. As for Newport Harbor, their win bumped their record up to 3-0.
