Basketball Recap: River Diaz and Khalid Deiranieh Secure Win for Southwest SD

Southwest SD entered their tilt with Mount Miguel on Wednesday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They enjoyed a cozy 53-37 win over the Mount Miguel Matadors. For the Raiders, this counts as revenge for the 70-48 victory the Matadors walked away with the last time they faced one another back in February of 2024.

Leading Southwest SD to victory were Khalid Deiranieh and River Diaz. Deiranieh posted 13 points, while Diaz put up 12 points. Shaun Verdida was another key player, putting up seven points.

Despite the defeat, Mount Miguel had strong showings from Jamell Willey, who dropped a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards, and Jaidyn Landers, who went 5-for-9 en route to 11 points. What's more, Landers also racked up four rebounds, the most he's had since back in December of 2024.

Southwest SD's win bumped their record up to 21-6. As for Mount Miguel, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five games, which has put a noticeable dent in their 11-13 record this season.

Coming up, Southwest SD won't have much time to rest: their next match is against San Ysidro at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Southwest SD is facing San Ysidro at the right time seeing as San Ysidro is stuck on a 12-game losing streak. As for Mount Miguel, they will challenge El Capitan at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Mount Miguel is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.2 points per game this season.
