Softball Recap: Austin Packers vs. Owatonna Huskies

Austin extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to five on Thursday, dropping them down to 0-2. They took an 11-7 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Owatonna Huskies. If the Packers were looking for revenge after losing 13-6 to the Huskies when the teams met back in April of 2025, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Austin saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kaydence Schaefer, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Another was Avery Anderson, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.

As for Owatonna, the win was the fourth in a row (dating back to last season) for them, bringing their record up to 1-0. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 2.25 runs across that stretch.

On Owatonna's side, Jess Smith made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits. Smith was also stellar in the batter's box, firing off two home runs and five RBI while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, Kendra Bogen was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, four runs, and one RBI. Jasmine Thiele was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two triples, two runs, and one RBI.

Looking ahead, Austin will welcome Faribault at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Owatonna, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, an 11-4 defeat against Brainerd on the 10th.
