Basketball Recap: Dan River Drops Highest Score of Season Against Gretna

Dan River scored the most points they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They lost 69-47 to the Gretna Hawks. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Wildcats this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 57-44 back in December of 2024.

Despite the loss, Dan River saw an underclassman step up: freshman Liza Maxey went 10 for 17 on her way to 21 points in addition to eight boards and three blocks. The dominant performance gave Maxey a new career-high in points. Samaria Knick was another key player, putting up eight points and 14 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Dan River smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 24 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive boards in eight consecutive contests.

Gretna's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ashley Myers led the charge by going 10 of 18 en route to 25 points and five boards. Myers continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Chinara Miller, who almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine rebounds.

Dan River's defeat was their 18th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-15. As for Gretna, the victory snapped their losing streak at four games and leaves them with a 11-7 record.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Dan River will head out to challenge Tunstall at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Dan River is facing Tunstall at the right time seeing as Tunstall is stuck on an eight-game losing streak. As for Gretna, it'll be a Battle of the Birds when the Gretna Hawks take on the Prince Edward County Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
