Basketball Recap: Chaparral Piles Up the Points Against Douglas County

You can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Chaparral's strategy against Douglas County on Wednesday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Chaparral Wolverines blew the Douglas County Huskies out of the water with a 73-45 final score. Given the Wolverines' advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked fourth, while the Huskies are ranked 146th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Leading Chaparral to victory were Luke Howery and Luke Williams. Howery went 8 for 12 en route to 21 points along with seven rebounds and five assists, while Williams almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine boards. Williams is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he's now posted three or more in the last six games he's played. Another player making a difference was Christian Williams, who posted ten points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals.

Chaparral smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. They are a perfect 3-0 when they hit their own glass that hard.

When it comes to explaining why Douglas County lost, don't look at Roman Saiz. Despite the final result, he scored seven points along with five assists and three steals. Those five assists gave Saiz a new career-high. Henry Shoemaker was another key player, putting up seven points.

The win (which was Chaparral's sixth in a row) raised their record to 13-3. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 72.0 points per game. As for Douglas County, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost six of their last seven contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-11 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Chaparral will square off against Regis Jesuit at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Regis Jesuit's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season. As for Douglas County, they will face off against Mountain Vista at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Mountain Vista will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something Douglas County surely won't give up without a fight.
