Basketball Recap: Carter Monroe Key Part of Team Effort in Vikings Win

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Valley had no problem doing just that on Saturday. They secured a 52-48 W over the Lovington Wildcats. The Vikings haven't had any issues with the Wildcats recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.

Valley's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Carter Monroe led the charge by dropping a double-double with 11 points and ten boards. Monroe is becoming a predictor of Valley's success: when he posts at least ten rebounds the team is undefeated (and 11-14 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Luciano Mondragon, who made all 5 shots he took to post 13 points.

Despite the loss, Lovington still got an impressive performance from Kayle Covington, who shot 41% from the field on his way to 16 points. The contest was Covington's 12th in a row with at least 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Danny Criswell, who posted eight points and six boards.

Valley now has a winning record of 15-14. As for Lovington, the defeat snapped their winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 18-11 record.

Valley wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 41-37 loss against Artesia on the 12th. Lovington does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
