Recap: Wasatch Wasps vs. Cedar Valley Aviators
The Wasatch Wasps had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 16.8 points), and they went ahead and made it seven on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Cedar Valley 52-49. Given Wasatch's advantage in MaxPreps' Utah basketball rankings (they are ranked tenth, while Cedar Valley is ranked 43rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Wasatch's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ashley Garner, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 18 rebounds. Garner is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last nine games she's played. Another player making a difference was Danielle Garner, who almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine rebounds.
Cedar Valley's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Presley Whiting, who scored 15 points along with six rebounds. Ellie Larson was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with four steals.
Wasatch is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 17-3 record this season. As for Cedar Valley, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 12-8.
Wasatch will head out on the road to face off against Spanish Fork at 5:15 p.m. on Friday. The timing isn't great for Spanish Fork: they have been struggling with three straight losses at home, while Wasatch has snatched up three consecutive wins on the road. Cedar Valley will take on Maple Mountain at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Cedar Valley is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 50.5 points per game this season.
