Hilmar has gone 8-1 against Hughson recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Yellowjackets will head out to challenge the Huskies at 7:00 p.m. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
Hilmar's defense heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed last Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Orestimba 41-0. The game marked the Yellowjackets' most dominant win of the season.
Hilmar found their leader in sophomore Adam Branco, who rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Branco showed off some serious burst, cutting through the defense on one rush that went for 59 yards. Another player making a difference was Nathan Ayala, who picked up 75 receiving yards and one TD.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Hilmar proved: they limited Orestimba to a paltry 2.3 yards per carry. While six picked up at least three total tackles, Ayala stood above the rest. He picked up 75 receiving yards and one score. The dominant display was nothing new: Hilmar has now limited their opponent to fewer and fewer yards per carry in five consecutive matchups.
Hilmar didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Ayala and Jacob Sward.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Hughson). Everything went their way against Orestimba on Friday as they made off with a 38-13 victory. With the Huskies ahead 31-0 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
Hilmar better keep an eye on Eli Wilbanks. He was instrumental in Hughson's win, rushing for 102 yards and one touchdown. Lawson Aviles was another key player, rushing for 67 yards and one TD.
One reason for the win was Hughson's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. Tristan Benham was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up 2.5 himself. Hughson received some extra help from Cole Prouty, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
Hilmar's record is now 5-3. As for Hughson, their record now sits at 7-2.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Hilmar has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 230.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Hughson struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 171.6 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Hilmar ended up a good deal behind Hughson when the teams last played back in October of 2024, losing 41-24. Can the Yellowjackets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
