Baseball Game Preview: Gateway Charter Griffins vs. Gateway Eagles

The Gateway Charter Griffins will head out on the road to square off against the Gateway Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Gateway Charter is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 16 runs last Tuesday, they were much more limited against Evangelical Christian on Monday. They took a 5-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Sentinels.

Gateway Charter saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Yosmay Veliz, who scored a run while going 2-for-2. Brandon Lackwood was another, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one double.

Meanwhile, everything went Gateway's way against East Lee County on Tuesday as Gateway made off with an 11-4 victory. The result was nothing new for the Eagles, who have now won five matchups by six runs or more so far this season.

Antony Leiderman looked comfortable as he struck out seven batters over 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in strikeouts.

At the plate, Gateway let Jacob Hardman and Juan Carlos Lineras run wild. Hardman went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI, while Lineras went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double. Gateway is undefeated when Hardman posts two or more runs, but 2-3 otherwise. Tito Reyes also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Gateway has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 9.7 runs. Gateway Charter's loss dropped their record down to 3-6.

Gateway Charter came up short against Gateway when the teams last played back in March of 2023, falling 12-7. Can Gateway Charter avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
