Softball Recap: Middleton Beats Watertown for Their 11th Straight Victory

Middleton faced Watertown in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Monday. The Cardinals beat the Goslings by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 6-2. The victory was nothing new for the Cardinals as they're now sitting on 11 straight.

Megan Button was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off nine hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with two runs.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kylie Klock, who went 2-for-4 with five RBI, one run, and one double. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. Macey Blazek was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs.

Middleton's win was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 13-1. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average over those games. As for Watertown, their loss ended a nine-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 8-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Middleton will challenge Vel Phillips Memorial at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cardinals' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Spartans have averaged an impressive 9.1 runs per game this season. As for Watertown, they will square off against Fort Atkinson at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Blackhawks have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.5 runs per game on average), something the Goslings will no doubt try to take advantage of.
