Football Game Preview: Hammond Skyhawks vs. Cardinal Newman Cardinals

Hammond is a perfect 10-0 against Cardinal Newman since October of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Skyhawks will welcome the Cardinals at 6:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Hammond has three straight wins, Cardinal Newman has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Hammond's defense heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They blew past Ben Lippen, posting a 37-0 victory. The Skyhawks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by 24 points or more this season.

Hammond's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cade Amell, who threw for 96 yards and a pair of TDs on only nine passes. The dominant performance also gave Amell a new career-high in passer rating (123.1). Levi Myers was another key rusher, rushing for 65 yards and one score.

Meanwhile, Cardinal Newman was beaten by Porter-Gaud 57-8 on Friday.

Cardinal Newman's loss dropped their record down to 1-8. As for Hammond, their victory bumped their record up to 8-1.

Everything came up roses for Hammond against Cardinal Newman in their previous meeting back in November of 2024, as the team secured a 35-6 win. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was the Cardinals' Caleb Ford, who rushed for 201 yards and one touchdown.
