Baseball Recap: Gretna Triumphs

Gretna proved they can win big last Tuesday (they won by seven) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over the Bellevue West Thunderbirds. This was payback for the Dragons, who suffered a 7-4 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Jaxon Nielsen looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He is becoming a predictor of Gretna's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 2-1 (and 1-6 when he doesn't).

At the plate, Gretna saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Joe Sullivan, who scored a run while going 1-for-3. Another was Griffin Goldman, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles.

Gretna's victory bumped their record up to 3-7. As for Bellevue West, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-4 record this season.

Gretna will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Blair at 6:30 p.m. on the 22nd. As for Bellevue West, they will face off against Burke at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
