Softball Recap: Granite City Drops Highest Score of Season Against Althoff Catholic

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Granite City). Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Althoff Catholic Crusaders a 15-0 shutout on Wednesday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Warriors considering their two-run performance the match before.

Emilee Saggio looked comfortable as she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in strikeouts (five).

On the hitting side, Granite City let Cheyenne Gaddie and Riley Carnahan run wild. Gaddie scored three runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances, while Carnahan scored three runs and stole a base while going 4-for-4. Those three runs gave Gaddie a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Morgan Buckingham, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.

Granite City hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They are 2-1 when they post two or more strikeouts.

The win made it two in a row for Granite City and bumps their season record up to 5-8. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 1 runs in those games. As for Althoff Catholic, they dropped their record down to 0-10 with the loss, which was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season.

Granite City and Althoff Catholic could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings. The Warriors (ranked 354th) will meet Columbia (ranked 80th) at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Althoff Catholic will square off against Greenville at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday with a big rank disadvantage (516 vs. 107).
