Baseball Recap: Southwestern Triumphs

It may have taken ten innings to finish the job, but Southwestern ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 win over the Staunton Bulldogs. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Piasa Birds have posted against the Bulldogs since April 8, 2016.

The team relied heavily on Ian Brantley, who went 3-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Southwestern is 4-1 when Brantley posts three or more hits, but 4-13 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Ike Austin, who went 1-for-4 with two runs.

Southwestern's win bumped their record up to 8-14. As for Staunton, their defeat was their fifth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 10-9-1.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Southwestern will welcome Calhoun at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Piasa Birds' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Warriors have averaged an impressive 7.4 runs per game this season. As for Staunton, they will host Gillespie at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
