Division IV recap September 24, 2013
North Smithfield scored a stunning upset when it knocked off Hope, 37-12. At the time, the Blue Wave were ranked 21st in the state, while the Northmen were 28th.
Providence Country Day/Wheeler/Sanchez Complex's Komotay Koffie rumbled for the longest rushing play in Division IV this season in his game against Exeter-West Greenwich last week. Koffie's team fell to the Scarlet Knights as he sprinted for 60 yards on the play and finished with 104 in all.
Central Falls's dynamic duo of Malik Velasquez and Macelino Vega proved to be unstoppable against Smithfield, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Velasquez threw for 241 yards and 2 touchdowns and Vega had 175 yards receiving. Julian Soares helped Central Falls' passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 36 yards.
The Warriors' dynamic duo of Velasquez and Vega proved tough for the Sentinels to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.
Velasquez put up the best numbers through the air as Central Falls lost to Smithfield.
Koffie was the most successful running back in the league this week. Saul Mustaffa also contributed to the rushing game with 55 yards on the ground.
He went 10-19 with 1 interception.
Vega was the best receiver in the league this week as Jeff Lapierre's team fell to the Sentinels.
Leading Division IV in both passing and receiving yards, the Warriors' Velasquez and Vega have proven to be a lethal combination. Velasquez has thrown for 319 yards this season, while Vega has 7 catches for 219 yards. Mustaffa from Providence Country Day/Wheeler/Sanchez Complex leads the league in rushing with 159 yards.
An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Exeter-West Greenwich takes on North Smithfield. Jim Alves' team is currently in fourth, while Wes Pennington's team is in first.
There should be lots of points scored when Marquis Harper, Sr.'s team and Central Falls face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Knights comes in having scored 41 this season, while the Warriors have scored 28. Providence Country Day/Wheeler/Sanchez Complex scored 14 points last week as it lost to the Scarlet Knights.
The Northmen were able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after defeating Hope. North Smithfield came in at 22 in the state poll after placing at number 28 last week.
