Basketball Preview: Monarch Coyotes vs. Rocky Mountain Lobos
The Monarch Coyotes and the Rocky Mountain Lobos will face off at 6:30 p.m. on February 5th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Monarch will be looking to keep their nine-game home win streak (dating back to last season) alive.
On Saturday, Monarch strolled past the Panthers with points to spare, taking the game 71-52. Given Monarch's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 37th, while the Panthers are ranked 150th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Tyler Carlson was his usual excellent self, scoring 16 points along with three steals. Logan Laverty was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with two steals.
Meanwhile, Rocky Mountain was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Saturday as they fell 51-47 to the Hawks. Rocky Mountain has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Monarch is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 11 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 13-5 record this season. As for Rocky Mountain, their loss dropped their record down to 9-9.
Monarch strolled past the Lobos in their previous meeting back in January of 2023 by a score of 66-50. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Rocky Mountain's Charlie Dortch, who scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
