Softball Game Preview: Bangor Vikings vs. Berrien Springs Shamrocks

The Bangor Vikings are taking a road trip to square off against the Berrien Springs Shamrocks at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Bangor is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.2 runs per game this season.

Bangor will bounce into Saturday's contest after beating Gobles, who they had gone 0-3 against in their three prior meetings. The Vikings walked away with a 7-2 victory over the Tigers on Friday.

Isabelle Horvath made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 15 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 19 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted over her last ten matchups.

In other batting news, Alexis Wisniewski was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. That's the most hits she has posted over her last ten games. Carley McCoy was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Berrien Springs was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They lost 15-0 to Buchanan.

Bangor has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.6 runs over those games. As for Berrien Springs, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-14.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Bangor has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Berrien Springs struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.

Bangor might still be hurting after the 13-2 loss they got from Berrien Springs in their previous meeting back in May of 2022. Can the Vikings avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
