High school baseball rankings: Edwardsville, Archbishop Moeller, Andrean among seven newcomers to this week's MaxPreps Top 25

By Kevin Askeland May 3, 2022, 9:50am

Top of lineup remains unchanged as No. 1 St. Mary's Prep continues to pile up wins.

The MaxPreps Top 25 national baseball rankings had the least movement at the top and greatest movement at the bottom of the rankings, all in the same week. While the top 11 teams remain the same, including St. Mary's Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.) with five more wins this week, seven new teams enter the rankings overall.

Among the newcomers is Edwardsville (Ill.), which is undefeated in Illinois. Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati) joins the rankings as the top-ranked team in Ohio Division 1 while Andrean (Merrillville, Ind.) is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A in Indiana by the state coaches association.

Other newcomers include Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.), which exited the rankings after the National High School Invitational, but returns after winning nine straight since the tournament. A pair of Florida panhandle teams make the rankings as both Pace and Tate (Cantonment) are two of the top-ranked teams in the state heading into the postseason.

Finally, Dutchtown (Geismar, La.), which looms as a candidate to possibly knock off defending national champion Barbe (Lake Charles, La.) in the Louisiana Class 5A postseason joins this week's MaxPreps Top 25.

Dropped out: No. 12 St. Laurence (Burbank, Ill.); No. 13 St. Johns Country Day (Orange Park, Fla.); No. 18 Saint Francis (Mountain View, Calif.); No. 20 Villa Park (Calif.); No. 23 Brother Rice (Chicago); No. 24 Trinity (Louisville, Ky.); No. 25 Nixa (Mo.).

Best game: St. Mary's Prep 1, Catholic Central 0. The Shamrocks gave the No. 1-ranked Eaglets their toughest game of the season, allowing one in the fourth inning to St. Mary's powerful offense. Fortunately for the Eaglets, Nolan Higgins gave up one hit and struck out 12 in the win.

Player of the Week: Eric Nachtsheim, Reno. After belting a grand slam against Reed he bettered that with three home runs and eight RBI against Damonte Ranch.

Games to watch: Trinity vs. St. Xavier. A pair of Louisville teams take center stage this week in a game that will likely determine the top team in the city. With a win, St. Xavier has a chance to replace Trinity in the rankings, considering that it defeated Brother Rice (Chicago) twice while Trinity lost to the Illinois team.

Streaks: Silo (Okla.) now has a 23-0 record raised its win streak to 52. White River Valley (White River Junction, Vt.) lost the first game in school history when it fell to Thetford Academy 7-2 on April 26. The loss ended a 39-game win streak. No. 1 St. Mary's Prep has a 43-game win streak. Another team to watch is Colusa (Calif.), which is 25-0 this year, won its final game last year during a 27-1 season. The RedHawks are 58-1 over the past three seasons.
