Ohio hands out volleyball, soccer state titles

Led by Erin Williams, the St. Ursula Academy (Toledo) volleyball team won the Division I state title with a 15-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-18 victory over Coffman (Dublin) last Saturday in Wright State's Nutter Center. Williams had 15 kills and 11 digs. St. Ursula finished with a 28-1 record and won its last 20 matches.

Joining St. Ursula as state girls volleyball champions last Saturday were Lake Catholic (Mentor) in Division II, Bishop Fenwick (Franklin) in Division III and Lehman Catholic (Sidney, Ohio) in Division IV. …

TEAMS EARN STATE SOCCER TITLES
Yianni Sarris scored two goals over a three-minute span to lead the St. Ignatius (Cleveland) boys soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Centerville in the Division I state championship game last Friday in Columbus Crew Stadium. Sarris scored 18 goals this season as the Wildcats finished 23-0 and earned their fourth state title.

In Division III, the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (Cuyahoga Falls) boys soccer team avenged a loss in last year's Division III state final to Worthington Christian by beating the Warriors 3-2 last Friday.

Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls) beat North (Pickerington) 3-0 to win the Division I state girls soccer championship. In Division II girls action, Madeira (Cincinnati) edged Hathaway Brown (Shaker Heights) 2-1 in overtime.



RECRUITING NEWS
Lincoln (Gahanna) senior softball player Tiyona Marshall signed a letter of intent to play for Miami University on Nov. 11. Marshall, who has been a starter for the Lions since her freshman year including the last two seasons as their center fielder, will join former Lincoln catcher Kayla Ledbetter with the RedHawks. … Copley wrestler Sam Wheeler has signed a letter of intent to compete for Oklahoma, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Wheeler was 53-1 and earned a Division I state runner-up finish at 171 points last March.
